Resources To Start Your Virtual Assistant Biz

Laptop-Freedom-Student-Interview-Katey

Meet Katey! A Laptop Freedom Program Student!

Today we are chatting with a Laptop Freedom Program student, Katey King to chat about her journey, what inspired her to be a VA, and so much more!

Q: Let’s start with the BIG question: Why did you want to start a Virtual Assistant business?

A: I wanted to start my VA business because I was tired of being undervalued in my job, I was tired of saying no to trips and weekends away, and I was tired of working for people whose values do not align with my own. I knew there was more for me out there than the 9-5 life!

Q: What kind of “9-5” job do you have and has it helped with your VA biz?

A: My most relevant experience comes from working in the service industry, working reception/administration in a healthcare setting, and being a university student for five years! LFP made me realize that over the last few years, I have found a way to incorporate design, content creation, and social media into my job descriptions! I think the skills I’ve learned from these experiences have been really helpful in preparing me to run my own VA business & offer my clients amazing services!

Q: Is your goal to be a full-time VA or have a VA side-hustle? Why?

A: The goal is to become a full-time VA so that I can work from anywhere (including at home in my pjs with my cat!) When I first started the Laptop Freedom Program and made my 90-day goals, I thought that I was being overambitious when I said I wanted to start thinking about leaving my part-time job already, but I’m around the 60-day mark right now and I’m already doing it!

Q: How did you discover the Laptop Freedom Program?

A: I am lucky to be good friends with LFP legend Rachael Bradbury, who directed me to Rebecca’s WVA Instagram, then I joined the WVA Facebook Community, and the rest is history!

Q: What inspired you to enroll in the program?

A: I knew that if I was going to be an online business entrepreneur, I would want to have an online community and network to lean on!

Q: What is your favorite part of the Laptop Freedom Program so far?

A: It’s hard to pick my favourite part! I think going through the first modules and completing the step-by-step instructions on how to set up my business was amazing, because everything that seemed so scary suddenly wasn’t anymore, and just like that I was an entrepreneur with my own business! I also love being part of an amazing group of women where we celebrate each other’s wins and support each other every step of the way!

Q: What made you choose the Laptop Freedom Program over other VA programs?

A: I chose LFP because I love how active and involved the WVA Community is! I love Rebecca’s weekly Cocktails & Coaching, and I can’t wait to be part of the LFP Alumni group! I also just love Rebecca, her confidence and enthusiasm is so infectious and inspiring!

Q: Starting a VA business can feel scary, what helps you keep going?

A: It is so helpful to go back to the beginning of the program, where we establish our reasons why we chose to start our business, and set our goals and aspirations for what our business and lifestyle is going to look like! Knowing I’m working towards those goals and seeing how far I’ve come already helps keep me going!

Q: What has been the most challenging part of starting your VA biz?

A: The most challenging part of starting a Virtual Assistant business is that people don’t really know what a VA is, or how much work it is to become one, so it can feel a little lonely sometimes. That’s where having the support of a group of ladies who are going through the same process as you is so beneficial! Also time management! Calendar blocking is your friend!

Q: Between your VA biz, your 9-5, and the program, what does a day-in-the-life look like for you?

A: Everybody’s process is different, but I was personally in a place in my life where quitting my full-time 9-5 job felt aligned for me, so I found a part-time job and I dedicate basically every waking moment to my biz! I make sure to take breaks and take at least one day off a week to stay motivated and healthy. It is definitely overwhelming at times, but I know that the hustle now will be so worth it soon!

Q: What are your future plans for your Virtual Assistant business?

A: I am a natural leader and I am all about efficiency and organization in business, so I am unsurprisingly heading down an OBM path at the moment. However, I’m open to wherever my business takes me, so stay tuned!
